Senators’ rally stuns Columbus in 5-4 decision

Trailing the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 in the second period, the Ottawa Senators responded with four straight goals to capture a 5-4 win on home ice.

The four-goal rally came from Nick Paul, Matt Duchene, Mark Stone, and Bobby Ryan.

“We’ve just got to keep building,” Duchene said. “Hopefully the tide is starting to turn a little bit. I think that’s been a big part of things for us. We haven’t been rewarded offensively and then we start to get away from our game a little bit and things snowball. Hopefully that starts to come when we play the way we did tonight.”

The win pushed the Sens to 12-16-8.

Sonny Milano struck twice for Columbus and Josh Anderson and Zach Werenski added single markers in the stunning loss.

“After they scored those two goals at the end of the second period, it gave them life,” Werenski said. “We just didn’t come out strong in the third period and they did. We talked about it between periods, that it’s going to happen, it’s a tied hockey game and the next one’s huge and we didn’t elevate our game so it’s kind of our fault, I think.”

Mike Condon made 21 saves to pick up the win.

“We capitalized on the scoring chances we got whether they were odd-man rushes or things around the crease. We did a better job of finding the net today and that’s something that’s been missing for quite some time now. It’s nice to see that the guys still know what they’re doing,” Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson said after the win.

Derick Brassard scored earlier in the game for the Senators.

The loss dropped the Jackets to 22-14-3.

“If we can’t get our game back and get some sort of push at that point in time (Paul’s goal), because of that goal then there’s major problems,” Jackets head coach John Tortorella said. “Any goal, whether it be good or bad, gives a team a lift, but that’s how you play in the National Hockey League, is handle momentum, get momentum back on your side when you lose it and we didn’t.”

Sergei Bobrovsky made 23 saves in taking the loss.

“I’m not going to get into ripping on [Bobrovsky]. That’s not what I’m saying. [He] is in with the group of players. We have 20 players that play the game each and every night and everybody is involved in this. It’s a situation [where] I’m anxious to see how guys handle themselves,” Tortorella said after the game.
