In Seattle, the Ottawa Senators needed two third period goals on Thursday night to rescue them after blowing a three-goal lead over the Kraken on Thursday.
Claude Giroux and Alex DeBrincat scored in the third to tie the game, 4-4, and give the Sens a 5-4 win.
“Sometimes that works out like that,” DeBrincat said. “There were a couple like that against us. It’s nice to go the other way and we can benefit from it. We’re happy we can get that win and two points.”
For the Seattle, the loss kept them form crawling to within two points of the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights atop the Pacific Division.
“You don’t get to start over, obviously the start put us in a big hole,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “We’re able to dig out, so that’s a real positive. But we didn’t start on time tonight.
“Disappointing. We didn’t get out of our end well enough in the third period, and it ended up costing us.”
Ottawa took a 3-0 lead in the first period on a series of quick strikes.
Shane Pinto put Ottawa ahead 1-0 at 4:10 of the first.
Jakob Chychrun and Patrick Brown then scored 17 seconds for a 3-0 advantage.
“That’s a big win for us, to stay with it the way we did, and find timely goals,” Ottawa coach D.J. Smith said. “I mean, that’s as fast a team as we played and that’s a really good hockey team.”
Mads Sogaard made 29 saves in the Sens win.
“That was awesome. But most importantly, we got the win,” Brown said. “That’s a tough game to play. Sometimes you get up early, and then all of a sudden you’re down on the third. But we stuck together, and we kept playing the right way. We didn’t try and cheat for offense. We just kept playing the right way and we got the win.”
Ottawa improved to 33-27-4.
Seattle reeled off four straight goals to take a 4-3 lead in the third period.
Jared McCann trimmed the deficit to 3-1 just past the midway point of the opening stanza.
In the middle frame, the Kraken got even on a pair of goals.
Jaden Schwartz cut it to 3-2, and McCann hit for his second of the night to tie it 3-3, headed to the third.
“I thought the resilience there was pretty good,” DeBrincat said. “We go up 3-0 quick, they came back, battled back. They’re a good team. We knew it was going to come and just to stick with it.
“Even when we were down 4-3, we battled back right away. [Giroux] got that goal right after that. Good game by us. We never gave up.”
Vince Dunn put the Kraken ahead, 4-3 in the third period.
Philipp Grubauer made 26 saves in the Seattle loss.
