Senators extinguish Flames, 6-1

In Ottawa, the Senators kept their recent hot streak going with a 6-1 demolition of the visiting Calgary Flames on Thursday.

The Sens kept it consistent with two goals in each period.

“We’ve been playing really well,” the Senators ‘Thomas Chabot said. “To get wins, everybody’s in a better mood, everybody’s happy to come to the rink, everybody gets more confidence.”

Matt Murray made 29 saves to get the win.

“I thought that was Matt Murray’s best game this year,” Senators chead oach D.J. Smith said. “He looked really calm back there. Pucks hit him. He was in control. We hung him out to dry in the third period and gave them some Grade A chances that we shouldn’t have given, but he made the saves.”

Milan Lucic was the lone goal scorer for the Flames in the middle period.

“This one’s on the players,” Lucic said. “We’ve got to be better.”

Drake Batherson and Erik Gudbranson  scored in the first period for a 2-0 lead to the Senators.

“We did a lot of good things,” Gudbranson said. “We finished. We scored six goals tonight. That’s big, to finish. We’ll take those and put them in the bank. It makes everyone feel good.”

Connor Brown  and Erik Brannstrom struck in the second period after Lucic had had scored.

“I thought we responded well after that goal,” Murray said. “We didn’t really sit back. We kept going and got a few more goals.”

Colin White scored twice in the third period including an impossible angle shot below the goal line.

David Rittich got the start and made 16 saves on 20 shots into the middle frame.

“It doesn’t matter when goals are scored or what’s going on, you’ve got to keep battling,” Calgary head coach Geoff Ward said. “You’ve got to find ways to get some traction back in the hockey game.”

Artyom Zagidulin made nine saves in a mop up role, it was his NHL debut.
