In Chicago Tuesday, the Ottawa Senators scored three times in the second period to escape with a 4-3 win over the Blackhawks.
Dion Phaneuf had the game-winner on the power play in the middle frame.
The Senators’ win was their first in Chicago since 2001.
“It’s a tough barn to come into,” said defenseman Erik Karlsson, who assisted on Phaneuf’s goal. “They’ve been good for so many years, and you always have to come in here and battle. We were fired up starting the game, and that carried us all the way to the 60-minute line.”
Mike Condon made 23 saves and was solid in the third period when the Hawks turned up the pressure to try to extend their win streak to six games. He also stopped a penalty shot in the final frame from Marcus Kruger.
“I guess that’s going to happen, what can you do?” Chicago’s Jonathan Toews said. “It’s frustrating when pucks don’t go in, especially when it can be the difference-maker in the game. You give yourself a chance to tie things up late in the game. Obviously, we don’t want to get behind, but we did.”
Bobby Ryan, Derick Brassard and Tom Pyatt potted goals for Ottawa.
The third period featured the Hawks defense clamping down on the Sens and Richard Panik scoring at 1:42 to close the score to 4-3. But that was all the offense for the rest of the match.
“What I liked was our pushback,” Ottawa head coach Guy Boucher said. “Our goalie made some timely saves, but we pushed back and we kept our shooting mentality. I really think this was a terrific team effort.”
Artemi Panarin and Tyler Motte had goals for Chicago.
Scott Darling had 26 saves in the loss.

Marcus Kruger had a chance to get the game even for the Hawks in the third when he was awarded a penalty shot but the chance was missed.
“A penalty shot is a great chance to score. I don’t know the odds there, but it’s a great chance to score a goal,” Kruger said of his shot. “Obviously, I would have liked to have scored on that one. It didn’t happen this time. There’s not much to do about it right now.”
