Senators edge Ducks in OT, 2-1

In Ottawa Thursday, the Senators won their fourth straight on the strength of a power play goal from Mike Hoffman with less than a minute left in extra time to down to the Anaheim Ducks, 2-1.

“That was our kind of objective leading up to the Christmas break,” Hoffman said. “We wanted to finish on a high note.”

Mike Condon made 24 saves to get the win for the Senators.

“I love them all. Love them all. You can’t ask me to single one out. Everyone I enjoy. I enjoy them all,” Condon said after the game when referring to the 24 shots he stopped.

Jakob Silfverberg scored a power play goal with 10 seconds left in the middle frame to tie the game at 1-1.

“I think (Corey) Perry did a great job and realized that I was open,” Silfverberg said. “I don’t know how he saw me. It was pretty much a tap-in and it was a big goal at the time and got some momentum swinging our way. Probably one of my easier ones, but it was a big one for us.”

John Gibson made 16 saves as the Ducks fell to 17-12-6.

“That’s West Coast hockey. We know that it’s been a grind. When you play back-to-back on the road and you’ve been out for 13 days, 14 days, it does take its toll. We had a day yesterday to re-energize ourselves with a day off,” Anaheim head coach Randy Carlyle said of the game. “Hopefully the guys did some Christmas shopping. I don’t know if they got me a gift or not. I’m not going to hold my breath.”

Ryan Dzingel scored for Ottawa in regulation.
