Senators defeat hapless Kings, 4-1

If it wasn’t clear before Thursday night, it should be clear now. The Los Angeles Kings are done.

The visiting Ottawa Senators won their second straight road game for the first time this season, 4-1, over the Kings.

Anders Nilsson made 33 saves to get the win.

“Obviously the result is great, getting the win, but I think it’s how we’ve played,” the Senators’ Dylan DeMelo said. “We’ve done a real good job of just sticking with the game plan.

“There’s ebbs and flows to where the other team is taking it to you pretty good, but we’ve done a good job of just playing our way. We’ve stayed with it and we’re getting rewarded for it.”

The Sens improved to 17-23-5.

Chris Tierney struck for two goals and Bobby Ryan and Christian Wolanin added single markers.

“I thought we had good momentum from last game coming into this game,” Tierney said. “Obviously Colin going down early, a lot of guys had to step up and play some big minutes, so I thought the whole team gave a 60-minutes effort. Every forward, every D, goalie, everybody was going.”

Kyle Clifford scored the Kings’ only goal.

“I think we kind of let up after we scored our first goal and let them into the game,” Jake Muzzin said. “They got two and then we just couldn’t get back into it. It’s disappointing, frustrating. We can’t let teams off the hook. We let them back into the game, and they took advantage of it.”

Jonathan Quick made 23 saves in the loss.

“That’s awful. That’s just embarrassing, to be honest. There’s not much more to say other than that,” Clifford said.
