Sell-out crowd sees Devils burn Sens

BINGHAMTON – Nathan Bastian tied the game in the third period and scored the winner in the second round of the shootout as the Binghamton Devils downed the visiting Belleville Senators, 3-2, in front of a sellout crowd at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday.

Logan Brown gave the Senators the lead just 1:20 into the game. Brown cut to the front of the net and beat goaltender Cory Schneider for his 10th of the year on an odd-man rush. Assists on Brown’s opening tally were credited to Drake Batherson and Cody Goloubef for the 1-0 lead.

Binghamton electrified the sellout crowd late in the first frame to tie the game. Marian Studenic beat Marcus Hogberg on a breakaway with 2:52 left in the first for his 11th of the season from Blake Pietila and John Quenneville. After one period, the game was tied at one with Belleville holding an 8-4 shot advantage.
The Senators scored the only goal of the second period as Mac McCormick buried a one timer from the right wing circle for his seventh of the season. Great passing by Aaron Luchuk and Tobias Lindberg set up McCormick’s go-ahead goal just 2:25 into the second. Binghamton trailed 2-1 after two periods of action.
Early in the third, Nathan Bastian deflected in a power-play goal to tie the game at two. Colton White put a shot on net that Bastian got a piece of it for his 13th of the year just 1:32 into the final period with assists from White and Michael McLeod.
After no scoring in overtime, Bastian scored in the second round and Schneider stopped all three chances for the 3-2 shootout win. Schneider denied 24 of 26 and earned second star honors in the victory.
