In Montreal, the visiting Seattle Kraken were looking to get off the rails of their four-game skid on Monday. Instead, the Canadiens doubled them up, 4-2, to extend the schneid to five games.
Sam Montembeault made 31 saves in the win.
“We wanted to make it hard to play in our rink, and I think tonight we did that,” Monahan said. “And we started off that way, and when you do that sometimes, you can kill the other team as well.”
Montreal moved to 11-11-3.
Sean Monahan hit for a double to end a long drought, his first came at 4:03 to give the Habs a 1-0 lead.
Tanner Pearson pushed the advantage to 2-0 at 3:12 of the middle frame, also breaking a drought going back to October.
Monahan hit his double at 6:58 of the second to balloon the lead to 3-0.
Seattle got on the board at 14:05 of the second on a marker from Jared McCann, to make it 3-1 to Montreal.
“We’re chasing the game,” McCann said. “Obviously, our goalie makes some huge saves in the first or it would have been 5-0 after the first period. You know it’s frustrating. We’re all frustrated right now because we know we are better.”
The Kraken dropped to 8-12-6.
The Kraken got within one at 3-2, on a strike by Vince Dunn at 4:49 of the third.
“It’s four losses, so we probably shouldn’t take too much away from it,” Dunn said. “It’s really unacceptable to come out with nothing.”
Josh Anderson scored his first of the season with 32 seconds left on the game clock for the 4-2 final.
“The guys are happy for ‘Andy,’” Monahan said. “He’s been through some tough times to start here. I mean, you get a win on home ice, he gets his first, and yeah, it feels good.”
Philipp Grubauer made 26 saves in the loss.
