In Seattle, the Kraken scored eight goals in a game for the first time in their brief history. The victims of the onslaught were the San Jose Sharks.
The final count was 8-5 for the Kraken.
“I think it was a game going back and forth a lot,” Kraken forward Andre Burakovsky said. “I think we were doing a really good job taking care of the chances that we created and the chances they gave us. Really good to see so many players contributing on the offensive side and defensive side.”
Martin Jones made 21 saves in the Seattle win.
Seattle improved to 11-5-3.
“Sometimes there are nights like this, I kind of had that feel right from the go,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “It was just one of those nights where, I mean, there was a lot happening. You know, [Jones] didn’t let in a bad goal tonight and made some huge saves. But with, I think there were [53] shots, 13 goals, so it was just one of those nights.”
San Jose’s Timo Meier hit for a hat trick in the loss.
“Obviously disappointing,” Meier said. “We came back and then I think we gave up too much, we were turning too many pucks over. I think there was parts of the game where we played well but it was just not consistent enough for 60 minutes. I think that was a winnable game.”
San Jose dropped to 7-12-3.
“The lack of pride in puck possession really cost us tonight,” Sharks coach David Quinn said. “Listen, they’re a fast team, give them credit, they play at a pace. They looked probably a little faster than they really are because I thought we played slow, not only physically slow, but mentally.”
Logan Couture scored to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Burakovsky tied it, 1-1, on a two-skater power play.
Meier hit his first of the night to give the Sharks a 2-1 lead headed to the middle frame.
Vince Dunn and Ryan Donato scored for the Kraken in the middle frame to erase the deficit and give them a 3-2 advantage.
Seattle’s Jamie Oleksiak scored midway through the second for a 4-2 lead.
“I felt a little better than I expected. A couple of defensive reads on the goals against I probably wish I could have had back,” said Oleksiak.
an Jose rallied in the third period with Meier’s second goal and a strike from Alexander Barabanov for a 4-4 tie.
The Kraken regained the lead, 5-4, for good this time, on a strike from Oliver Bjorkstrand at 2:48 of the third.
Matty Beniers had a goal in the third period, and Jaden Schwartz hit for a pair of markers late to seal the win.
“It was fun for the fans, it stunk for the coaches, giving up five,” Hakstol said. “You got to find different ways and the atmosphere in this building is awesome. I mean, that’s a party happening for 18,000 people and it’s fun to be able to win in different ways.”
Meier completed his hat trick in the third to make the 6-5 for the Kraken.
Schwartz’s second was an empty-net marker for the 8-5 final.
Kaapo Kahkonen made 19 saves in the Sharks loss.
