Seattle downs Canadiens, 4-3

In Montreal, Marcus Johansson had the only goal goal in a seven round skills competition on Saturday to give the Seattle Kraken a 4-3 win over the Canadiens.

Philipp Grubauer made 30 saves, in the Seattle win.

“We didn’t want to go home without a win,” Grubauer said. “That was a hard-earned win for sure. I think the last period we made it way too interesting, but we found a way to win it and get two points out of it and we get to go home. And we’ve got to take that momentum and how we played in the first two periods to our home.”

Seattle moved to 18-37-6.

“I think the boys feel very good about their game and so do I,” Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said. “It’s never perfect, not every game is perfect. We’ve had a couple of games where I feel close to perfect, but overall we’ve been pretty good. Sometimes you just don’t know if you’re going to get the goals or if you’re going to get the key saves, but overall we’re in every game and I think the guys see that.”

Nick Suzuki forced the extra session and eventual skills portion of the evening, with a goal late in the third period to tie it, 3-3.

“The guys stuck with it, eventually got a bounce at the end,” the Canadiens’ Brendan Gallagher said. “Too bad we couldn’t score in the shootout for ‘Monty.'”

Yanni Gourde opened the scoring in the game,to give the Kraken a 1-0 lead.

Michael Pezzetta tied the game, 1-1, for the Canadiens, but Ryan Donato  and Jared McCann scored to give Seattle a 3-1 lead.

Alexander Romanov also scored for Montreal, his goal cut the Seattle lead to 3-2.

Sam Montembeault made 32 save in the Habs loss.

“There’s a few shifts where I was trying to catch my breath and started to cramp up in the third,” Montreal’s Joel Edmundson said. “But it’s just nice to get back out there with the guys, and I think over the next couple of games I’ll get back into game shape.”
