Sea Dogs look to major trades to improve franchise

OROMOCTO, New Brunswick – With half the QMJHL season done the Saint John Sea Dogs see themselves swimming in uncharted waterers. Last season, the Sea Dogs won the QMJHL President’s Trophy and earned a trip to the 2017 Memorial Cup.

This season, they find themselves in 17th place, six points ahead of last place Shawinigan Cataractes who are in the cellar with 23 points.  So, to try and turn things around General Manager Trevor Georgie pulled the biggest trade in Sea Dogs’ history on December 19, 2017 by acquiring draft picks from Drummondville Voltigeurs for centre Joe Veleno.

The breakdown of the trade is as follows:

  • 2018 1st round pick (previously acquired from the Gatineau Olympiques)
  • 2019 1st round pick (previously acquired from the Blainville-Boisbriard Armada)
  • 2020 1st round pick
  • 2018 2nd round pick (previously acquired from the Quebec Remparts)
  • 2020 2nd round pick (conditional)

“This is the biggest transaction in our history, and one of the largest QMJHL trades in recent years,” Georgie said on the Sea Dogs’ web site. “It was very important for us, as an organization, to acquire multiple, high draft picks in a trade like this. Our goal is to build the core of our next championship team, and we believe we have acquired the assets to help us do that.”

On January 3rd, the Sea Dogs made another trade this time with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. The Sea Dogs acquire goalie Tommy DaSilva and a 2018 eighth-round draft pick in exchange for Isiah Campbell.
