In a move that seemed inevitable, the New Jersey Devils placed beleaguered goalie Cory Schneider on waivers, Monday.
Schneider is 0-4-1 on the season with a 4.59 goals against average.

“We addressed it with our players, and unfortunately this is part of the business, but this isn’t the end of the road with Cory,” Devils head coach John Hynes said. “It’s an opporunity for us to try and help him get his game to where it needs to be. We had a similar situation with him last year where it worked out really well where he went down to Binghamton and played, got some footing for himself and his game back and came back and played well for us later in the year.”
Schneider has been with the Devils since 2013 and arrived via a trade with the Vancouver Canucks. At the time, it seemed he was the answer to the Devils’ next push to a Stanley Cup.
Newly acquired Louis Domingue was recalled from the Binghamton Devils of the AHL to ice for the big club.
“It’s a lot to take in but I’ve done it before and I’m super glad to be here,” Domingue said.
“We’ll take it a day at a time. It’s nothing special, I just have to play the game of hockey. If I can help [Blackwood] along the way then that’ll be good. It’s going to be interesting to see how we push each other and I’ve seen a lot of situations with a lot of goalies so far. If I can help him and he can help me than it’ll be great for the team.”
Domingue was acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier this month.
If Schneider clears waivers he will be assigned to Binghamton.
Mackenzie Blackwood ill be the Devils’ number one goalie going forward.
“Mackenzie has been consistent and he’s played well and been able to manage himself and mange his workload,” Hynes said of Blackwood, who is 7-4-3 with a 2.79 GAA, .904 save percentage and one shutout in 14 games this season. “That was part of the decision-making process. It wasn’t the complete part of the decision, but it was a small part.”
