PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Flyers needed every one of Brayden Schenn’s three goals Monday night as they beat the Calgary Flames, 5-3.
“I’ve had a few two-goal games in my career and had a hat trick taken away from me last year, so to finally get one means a lot,” Schenn said. “It’s even more rewarding when it comes in a win and we get the two points. If I got the hat trick and we lost the game there in the third period, it would have been a different feeling.”
With the score 4-1 entering the third, the Flames rallied to make it 4-3 behind goals from Micheal Ferland and Michael Frolik.
The Flames were an emotional team after trading day when defenseman Kris Russell and forward David Jones were dealt away.
“It’s a tough day,” Flames captain Mark Giordano said. “You try to go through your routine as much as possible. You sort of always have one ear opened and you’re listening to what’s going on.
“Our will was there, our compete was there. And in the third, when it would have been easy to just pack it in, I thought we generated a lot and got a lot of good looks. I’m proud of the guys for that.”
Sean Monahan scored for the Flames as well to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead.
But the story of the game for Philadelphia was the hat trick from Schenn.
“Tonight, he did one of the things he does best: score goals,” Hakstol said. “He did that
tonight. For him, the indicators for him early in games, and I’m sure he knows it, his feet are moving, he’s got some physicality to his game. When he’s into the game that way on the first couple of shifts, usually it carries over into a good night offensively.”
Michal Neuvirth made 29 saves for the win.
“They executed well on a couple of plays, and we had some breakdowns,” Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. “They made us pay.”
