Savard, Monahan, Belzile out rest of season for Canadiens

David Savard, Sean Monahan and Alex Belzile each will miss the rest of the season for the Montreal Canadiens.

Savard is out because of a knee injury. The defenseman had missed the past two games because of an undisclosed injury.

The 32-year-old is second among Canadiens defensemen with 20 points (three goals, 17 assists), and sixth in the NHL with 176 blocked shots in 62 games.

Monahan recently had surgery for a groin injury. The forward has been out since Dec. 5 because of a lower-body injury.

The 28-year-old had 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) in 25 games. He was acquired by the Canadiens in a trade with the Calgary Flames on Aug. 18, along with a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, for future considerations.

Monahan is in the final season of a seven-year contract he signed with the Flames on Aug. 19, 2016, and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Belzile is out because of a broken leg. The forward last played in the Canadiens’ 3-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.

The 31-year-old had 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 31 games, and also had 26 points (14 goals, 12 assists) in 31 games with Laval of the American Hockey League.

Belzile signed a one-year, two-way contract July 13 and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The Canadiens have been decimated by injury this season. Goalie Carey Price (knee) and forward Paul Byron (hip) have missed every game. Forwards Juraj Slafkovsky (lower body), Cole Caufield (shoulder) and Josh Anderson (ankle) are out for the season, as are defensemen Arber Xhekaj (shoulder) and Kaiden Guhle (ankle).

Montreal (30-41-6) hosts the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; TSN2, RDS, BSDETX, ESPN+, SN NOW). The Canadiens are last in the Atlantic Division and were eliminated from contention for the Stanley Cup Playoffs on March 28.
