Sam Bagley, graphic artist, builds portfolio ahead of college Sheffield graphic artist honors Captain Tom and NHS in sweater designs

SHEFFIELD – This week we were introduced to a graphic artist. Had it not been for the #COVID19 lockdown, we might never have been able to make the acquaintance of Sam Bagley in Sheffield. The pandemic closed down schools in the United Kingdom and that left Sam in limbo with year end exams cancelled and college postponed.

“I should have sat my GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) this year but Covid-19 meant all my exams were cancelled,” Bagley said this week. “I have a provisional place on a Graphics course at Rotherham College.”

All this has meant the summer arrived early and a long wait on a provisional place in a Graphics course in college.

“Hopefully college starts in September,” he said.

So, we asked what a budding graphic artist and designer does when school is locked down and college is a few months away.

“As I’m not being set school work as such,” Bagley said. “I’ve been spending my time designing hockey shirts and other pieces to build a portfolio ready for college.”

So, that’s how Pro Hockey News found Sam, a die hard Sheffield Steelers fan.

We were attracted to the tribute paid to the National Health Service in the Steelers jersey design, a top of the hat to the NHS’ battle to save lives in #COVID19.

Sam, 15, has also been playing roller hockey for four years, playing for the Rotherham Blackhawks.

“I play in the U16’s, U24’s and Senior League,” Bagley said. “I was selected to play for Team UK in tournament due to be held in Detroit and I made it to the final round of the GB try-outs for the World Games in Columbia.”

Locked down and put on ice for a bit, Sam has made the most of his time building a portfolio to build off once college opens in the fall.

“I really would like a job in graphic design,” Bagley added. ” My ambition is to own or work in a hockey kit manufacturing company where I will be able to design kit putting the two things, I enjoy graphics and hockey together.”
