Saint John wins in OT over Chicoutimi

QUEBEC CITY, P.Q. — Seeing Chicoutimi come back twice after Saint John had the lead 1-0 and 2-1, the Sea Dogs got the final word on the second goal of the game by Charles Coyle leading Saint John to 3-2 win in game four of QMJHL semifinal.

With neither team able to take the lead after forty minutes with the score being 2-2, Saint John shot only 7 times in one period in half (third plus overtime) but one of the shots was the good one for Gerard Gallant’s team.

“Sometimes it didn’t go to the merit, I think tonight we should have won this game, we have had lots of scoring chances, we have worked really hard, our players played with lots of determination and we showed again, that when we played like tonight we are able to play with any teams in the league,” said Sagueneens head coach Marc-Etienne Hubert after the game.

“We played two great games at home and we are very proud of our players. The objective tonight was no regret and nobody in our locker room can say they have any regrets. We gave all we have had to give. On the other side adversity was there we have had enough chances to win the game. We have to give credit to their goaltender who has been very good.”

For one Christian Ouellet, even if he didn’t have any shot on net he played very good game, “We have played very good game, we missed some opportunities in overtime the puck didn’t role on our side but in that series we have to win four games. So we will go there and give everything to come back in front of our fans.”

Winning their first game in their semifinal series in overtime (5-4) in game three last Tuesday, Chicoutimi entered game four getting best scoring chances, but Saint John takes the lead before the first period ended.

“We’ve accomplished something big,” said the Sagueneens head coach Marc-Etienne Hubert to reporters after game three. “We have had to win our first game as soon as possible and it should have happened tonight (Tuesday). We are back in  the series.”

Guillaume Asselin got Chicoutimi second good scoring opportunity but each times Saint John goaltender Mathieu Corbeil made the saves.

Unable to keep rebound on Coyle shot, Jonathan Huberdeau pick the lose puck and beat Gibson with a backhanded shot at 7:21. Saint John took the lead for second times in game (2-1). And less than 20 seconds later, Chicoutimi left winger Charles Hudon, brought back both teams to square one with a shot that find his way in, on Corbeil blocker side at 7:41.

In overtime, Chicoutimi had the best chances to end that game with a victory. Ouellet missed an open net unable to lift the puck over Saint John goaltender’s pads, Charles Hudon and Jean-Gabriel Pageau missed other chances.

But as often happened in game that need overtime to decide a winner, after Sea Dogs netminder Corbeil steal   Sagueneens   center Steve Lebel with a glove save, the second goal of the game by Coyle put an end to game five giving third wins to Saint John at 6:13 of the overtime period.
