In Montreal, the visiting Buffalo Sabres woke up in the third period and scored four goals en route to a 6-1 win over the Canadiens on Thursday night.
Devon Levi made 32 saves in the win.
“It was a very special game, having a lot of people in the stands, being back home, playing against that team,” Levi said. “I give credit to the boys, they played a great game. They locked it down and we limited their chances and we put the puck in the back of the net. The power play was unreal today, so just a really good team effort.”
Buffalo moved to 16-19-4.
After a scoreless opening stanza, the Sabres posted two goals in the middle frame to take a 2-0 lead over the Canadiens.
Casey Mittelstadt scored off the power play at 5:33 of the middle frame for a 1-0 lead to Buffalo.
Jeff Skinner extended the advantage to 2-0 at 6:59 of the second.
“I think tonight, the power play obviously got off to a good start there in the second period, and then I thought our line played well,” Skinner said. “When your line plays well, the individuals are going to have success, so it’s nice to contribute to the win.”
Montreal dropped to 16-17-5.
Joel Armia was the lone striker for the Canadiens, his shorthanded goal at 13:19 of the second to send the game to the third with the Sabres up, 2-1.
In the third, the Sabres opened the scoring with Jack Quinn pushing the lead to 3-1 at 6:45 of the third.
Tage Thompson, who hit for a double in the third, advanced to lead to 4-2 less than two minutes later.
“They have a lot of talent up front, so you have to be wary of those guys and limit their opportunities when you can,” the Canadiens’ Jordan Harris said.
Rasmus Dahlin ballooned the lead to 5-1 at 14:31 with an empty-net marker.
Thompson scored off an odd man rush at 18:32 for the 6-1 final count.
