Sabres survive Red Wings rally, down Detroit, 5-4, on skills

In Detroit, the Red Wings scored three times in the third period on Wednesday night to rally for a 4-4 tie with the Buffalo Sabres. “I think every team in the League is going to lose leads in the third period,” Buffalo coach Don Granato said. “I liked the response and the way we battled back.”

Detroit ended up salvaging the loser’s point when the Sabres won penalties for a 5-4 decision.

David Perron hit for a goal in the third period rally, and Oskar Sundqvist  added a double to send the game to extra time which solved nothing.

“You’re supposed to be happy after coming back the way we did, but this still stinks right now,” Red Wings forward Andrew Copp said. “We had too many chances on the power play to not get two points out of this game.”

Jack Quinn was credited with the deciding goal on skills for Buffalo.

Craig Anderson made 41 saves in the Sabres win.

Buffalo improved to 10-12-1.

Dylan Cozens scored a pair for the Sabres.

“When you are out there on the kill, that’s always the main focus,” Cozens said. “You aren’t looking for a goal, but if an opportunity comes, you are going to take it.”

Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a strike by Jonatan Berggre.

“I’m really proud of this team,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “You just don’t come back from down three goals in this league.”

Buffalo replied with goals from Cozens  and Mattias Samuelsson for a 2-1 lead after one period.

In the middle frame, Cozens   picked up his marker of the night to make it, 3-1.

Midway through the second period, Jeff Skinner  struck to make it 4-1 headed to the third period rally by Detroit.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 30 saves in the Detroit loss.
