Sabres rally for OT win over Pens

In Buffalo on Friday night, Brandon Montour saved the game for the Sabres when he scored at 17:28 of the third period to tie the Pittsburgh Penguins at 3-3.

Conor Sheary completed the come back with his second goal of the game at 4:11 of the extra session for a 4-3 win.

“We know at this point of the year we’ve got to press for every point we can get, so those two points were really important,” said Sheary, who had an assist. “I get the opportunity to be in some really good positions being out there in overtime. I was able to take advantage tonight.”

Linus Ullmark made 41 saves to get the win.

The Sabres improved to 30-26-8 and trail the wild card spot by seven points.

Nick Bjugstad, Patric Hornqvist and Sidney Crosby were the strikers for the Pens.

“We probably had more scoring chances, but it’s hockey,” Penguins center Evgeni Malkin said. “Sometimes that happens. They scored in the final three minutes, we need to help block shots, help the goalie. It’s hockey, sometimes it’s a little bit of luck.”

Pittsburgh dropped to 33-22-9.

“We had some great chances in overtime, they go the other way, we hit a post. That’s the way it goes sometimes. We probably haven’t buried the ones we’ve gotten and then it’s gone back the other way and ended up in our net,” Crosby  said.

Jack Eichel also scored for the Sabres.

Matt Murray made 26 saves in the loss.

“It’s frustrating that we let a point get away because it was there to be had,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “I thought for most of the night we were the better team. We carried the play for most of the night, we had some opportunities in overtime to score and we don’t finish.”
