Sabres, Housley get first win in Anaheim, 3-1 over Ducks

The Buffalo Sabres’ head coach, Phil Housley, got his first NHL win on Sunday night in Anaheim as his Sabres  defeated the Ducks, 3-1.

“It feels great, obviously, but I have to tip my hat to the guys in that locker room,” Housley said.

Chad Johnson got the win on 25 saves for Buffalo who moved to 1-4-1 on the season.

“We haven’t been playing our best hockey and it’s been coming,” Buffalo defenseman Jake McCabe said. “[Housley] has been patient with us. It was nice for not only us, but for Phil to get that first win. Hopefully it’s the first of many.”

Chris Wagnerstruck for a shorthanded goal for the Ducks late in the middle frame to tie the score 1-1.

“It doesn’t help getting behind because then you’re chasing the game,” Wagner said.

The Ducks 0-for-21 on the powerr play and are beginning to grip the sticks a little tighter.

“We haven’t been able to put together 60 minutes,” Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said. “You can tell we’re starting to squeeze the sticks.”

John Gibson took the loss on 28 saves.

“If we’re not scoring, we have to be better defensively,” Gibson said. “I have to be better.”
