Ruminations on the NHL’s first half of the season

LOS ANGELES – Here 17 things I’ve learned in the first half of the NHL season while watching Auston Matthews and Patrick Laine take the league by storm.

1. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin haven’t played this well at the same time in the regular season since their first Stanley Cup.

2. Bruce Boudreau is my coach of the Year. Hiring Scott Stevens was a brilliant move.

3. Islanders GM Garth Snow needs to fall on his sword. He ruined the Islanders not Jack Capuano. He let two all-stars (Kyle Okposo and Franz Nielsen) leave and their heart and soul (Matt Martin). John Tavares deserves a better GM.

4. Antti Raanta has been the Ranger’s best goalie this year.

5. If Jonathan Add to dictionary did not get injured Gerard Gallant would still be coaching in Florida.

6. Where would the Lightning be if they had traded Jonathan Drouin last year.

7. Boston is primed to miss the playoffs on the last day of the season again.

8. Jaromir Jagr will not play hockey when he’s 50, in the NHL.

9. The only thing Jeff Carter hasn’t done for the Kings is sell hot dogs between periods.

10. Detroit needs to accept the playoff streak is over and everyone should be eligible to moved except Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou.

11. Patrick Kane, Artem Anisimov and Artemi Panarin is the best line the NHL has seen in years.

12. The Winnipeg Jets are the best watch in hockey if you don’t care if they win.

13. Patrick Roy jumped off Colorado’s sinking ship in the nick of time.

14. Brent Burns is going to win the Norris Trophy and he deserves it.

15. Patrick Maroon is the player Edmonton paid Milan Lucic to be.

16. The Flyer’s problem isn’t goaltending it’s they’re awful five on five.

17. Carolina GM Ron Francis is quietly putting together a winning franchise that would be cherished in Quebec City.
