Royals take 3-2 series lead home

READING, Pa – In Game Five of their ECHL playoff series between the Reading Royals and Toledo Walleye, the number two played a huge part before and during the game. However, it was the number three that made headlines at the end of the night.

Brandon Alderson, the only Reading Royal who came into the game with more than one goal in the playoffs got the hat trick and goaltender Martin Ouellette made 34 saves on 37 shots as the Royals defeated the Walleye 5-3 sending the series back to Reading, Pa Sunday afternoon with the Royals a chance to pull off not only one of the teams 2016KellyCupmajor upsets in team history but in ECHL history as well.

The Royals and Walleye each had two unanswered goals three times in the game. With the score 4-2, Toledo got within one late in the second period but Alderson put the game out of reach at the 6:30 mark of the third period to not only put the game out of reach but potentially put Toledo out of the series for good.

As expected Toledo Head Coach Derek Lalonde decided to stick with Jake Peterson in net to start the game but that decision ended up seeing Peterson pulled after giving up four goals on 11 shots. Jeff Lerg came in and allowed only one goal on nine shots. Reading went back to Ouellette in net and was stellar all night keeping the Royals in the game. Alderson now leads the ECHL with six goals in five games. Both teams scored twice on the power play.
