BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Trailing 2-0 in the third period the Tucson Roadrunners scored twice, including the tying goal with 15.1 seconds remaining in regulation, before bowing to the Bakersfield Condors 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night.
Brendan Perlini finally broke through to get Tucson on the board at 8:36 of the third period, one-timing a shot past Condors goaltender Laurent Brossoit (33 saves) for his team-leading sixth goal of the season to make it 2-1.
With time running down in the third, Perlini was whistled for Interference at 17:32 but the Roadrunners top-ranked penalty kill responded, killing off the Bakersfield advantage. Then with goalie Adin Hill (16 saves) pulled for the extra attacker Chris Mueller tipped a Craig Cunningham shot past Brossoit (bro-SWAH) with 15.1 seconds left in regulation to give Tucson at least a point and push the game to overtime.
In the OT, Cunningham was thwarted on a breakaway by Brossoit and as the puck went the other way a second breakaway resulted for Josh Currie, who beat Hill over the left shoulder at 2:31 to give Bakersfield the win.
Despite the result, Tucson is now 7-1-2-0 on the regular season through its first 10 games and sits atop the AHL standings with an .800 win percentage.
The Roadrunners now return home for a season high six-game homestand, staring next Friday and Saturday night against the Manitoba Moose at 7:05 pm. Friday night is $2 beer night and Saturday is the first Dollar Day of the season with $1 hot dogs, popcorn, and soda.
