Tucson, AZ – Defenseman Vincent LoVerde buried two goals, but the Ontario Reign (3-2-2-0) fell to the Tucson Roadrunners (5-1-1-0) 3-2 at Tucson Arena Friday night.
The Roadrunners opened the scoring on the power play midway through the first period as former Reign defenseman Jamie McBain chipped a shot over the pads of Reign goaltender Anders Lindback (L, 17 saves on 20 shots) at 13:01. The Reign responded less than two minutes later as team captain Vincent LoVerde completed a beautiful effort to fire around the glove of Adin Hill (W, 39 saves on 41 shots) at 14:36. Forward Michael Latta added the second assist.
Tucson reclaimed the lead late in the second stanza as forward Michael Bunting snapped the puck past the blocker of Lindback from the right-wing circle at 17:03. Moments later, the Reign once again responded a LoVerde completed a 2-on-1 rush with forward Adrian Kempe at 18:53. The Reign dominated the shots in the second period, 14-6, and carried a 25-13 advantage through 40 minutes of play.
In the third period, the Roadrunners went up for good as forward Christian Fischer capitalized on the power play at 12:27. The Reign finished the game 0-for-1 on the power play, marking the first time this season the Reign failed to strike with the extra skater. The Roadrunners went 2-for-3.
