PEORIA, IL – The Peoria Rivermen were able to turn 6 minutes of competent hockey into a victory this Saturday at Carver Arena. The Rivermen gave the Macon Mayhem 9 power plays, had only 2 SOG in the second period, and still managed to win the game.
Rivermen goalie Kyle Rank made 30 saves out of the 32 shots he faced and saved the Rivermen from certain defeat. The Rivermen won 3-2 in front of 3,763 fans.
The first period was filled with penalties and plenty of Rivermen goals. What started with a Rivermen penalty turned into a 4-4 for 1:15. As soon as the Rivermen got to full strength another another penalty was taken for too many men. While on the penalty kill Timmy Hall glided into the Mayhem zone. He took hid time and waited for David Jacobson to take the bait and then sent the puck home for the short handed goal.
At 15:19 into the period Alec Hagaman got heated over a huge hit by Michael Wills. They got together to settle their differences, Hagaman dominating the fight with several hard rights and putting Wills down on the ice. The next Rivermen goal was achieved less than a minute later at 15:57. With a screen in front, Jacobson was not able to see Chris Wilson come from behind the net up to the slot to send the puck on a one way trip to the top right corner of the net.
The next Rivermen goal was on the power play at 19;03. The puck was sent from Garrett Vermeersch on the blue line to Adam Stuart in the corner to the front of the net where Terrance Wallin tapped the puck into the open net.
The second was relatively silent with little Rivermen or Mayhem action. The Rivermen were only allowed 2 shots in the entirety of the second period. The Mayhem were able to make their first strike at 14:35. Anton Lennartsson gave a perfect set up to Michael Montagna for the one timer goal.
Another silent period concluded the game. The Mayhem struck their last goal at 5:10, when Wills took a shot from the point that managed to find its way to the back of the net. The Rivermen were able to hold the Mayhem back from scoring any further goals.
