Rivermen Drop Hard-Fought Battle 3-2 in Pensacola Friday

Pensacola, FL – The Peoria Rivermen and Pensacola Ice Flyers scored two power play goals each and Pensacola notched the only even strength goal of the game to take a 3-2 regulation win Friday night in Pensacola. The win keeps Pensacola alive in the hunt for a first place finish with two games remaining in the weekend series between the two teams.Pennsacola IceFlyers logo

The Ice Flyers opened the scoring with a first-period powerplay tally. After Cody Dion went into the box for holding at 11:36 of the period, The Ice Flyers cashed in at 12:03 when Joe Caveny put a rebound into the net to make it 1-0. The Rivermen tied the score with their own power-play tally at 13:38 of the first. With Drew Baker in the box for interference, Dave Pszenyczny’s shot from the top of the left circle was tipped by Dion past John McLean to make it 1-1.

The Rivermen took the lead briefly in the second period, as at 9:42, with five seconds left on a power play, Pszenyczny’s shot siled through traffic and past McLean to make it 2-1. The Ice Flyers tied the game 14 seconds later when Stephen Buco came up with a puck in the slot and put it past Rivermen goaltender David Jacobson to make it 2-2. The Ice Flyers retook the lead for good at 15:45 of the second period when Caveney one-timed a feed from Corey Banfield past Jacobson for the eventual 3-2 final score.

Jacobson stopped 37 of 40 shots faced in goal to take the loss, dropping him to 11-7-0, 11-3-0 since joining the Rivermen. The loss is Jacobson’s first since February 13 against Louisiana.
