SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The Mississippi RiverKings (6-3-0) picked up their third win in a row Saturday night with a 2-1 victory against the Columbus Cottonmouths (4-5-0) at the Columbus Civic Center. The RiverKings defense held Columbus to 21 shots on goal and managed to put 45 on the Cottonmouths goal.
Ryan Marcuz started the scoring off in the first with a shorthanded goal to put the RiverKings ahead 1-0. The goal was Marcuz’s sixth on the season.
After a scoreless second period, the RiverKings extended their lead in the third after Brant Sherwood scored his fourth goal of the season on a deflected shot from Ryan Marcuz who picked up his second point on the night. The Cottonmouths Craig Simchuk cut the lead to one, scoring unassisted on a puck that managed to beat Brad Barone.
The Cottonmouths pulled goalie Brandon Jaeger with 43 seconds left and had one final chance to tie the game up but the shot would hit off the top of the net giving the RiverKings their third win in a row.
Brad Barone (3-2-0) picked up his third win on the season saving 20 shots for a .952 save percentage on the night. The Cottonmouths’ Brandon Jaeger (2-4-0) stopped 43 on his way to a loss for a .955 save percentage on the night.
