ROANOKE, Va. — The Mississippi RiverKings (16-10-2) peppered James Kruger with 53 shots on goal, but it was a four-goal second period that led the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs (8-13-4) past the RiverKings 6-3 on Friday night.
The Rail Yard Dawgs took the lead early in the first period. Colin Murray set up Mike Driscoll on a two-on-one who beat Brad Barone just 5:58 into the first period to put
Roanoke on top 1-0.
In the second, Roanoke pounced for four straight goals. Mike Moroso banged home a rebound past the leg of Barone to give the home team a two-goal lead under two minutes into the middle frame. Seven minutes later, Nick Schneider’s backhand shot squeaked past the glove side of Barone, giving the Dawgs a 3-0 lead and chasing Barone who was replaced by Andy DiCristofaro. The Dawgs tallied for two in 10 seconds when Murray slid a shot between the legs of DiCristofaro before Moroso notched his second of the game to put the Dawgs on top 5-0.
The RiverKings got one back late in the middle period. With the RiverKings on the power play, Sam Higgins’ wrist shot beat James Kruger with assists to Dillon Fox and Corey Tyrell to cut the deficit to four going into the third.
The RiverKings continued to cut the Dawgs’ lead in the third. Nearly four minutes into the final frame, Dustin Jesseau converted on a pass from Barr and buried a shot past a sliding Kruger to bring the RiverKings within three. Then, with Barr in the box, Fox found an open Tyrell in the slot who beat Kruger, slashing the Roanoke lead to 5-3.
Roanoke got one goal back late in the third when Murray added his second goal of the night on a three-on-one opportunity to give the Rail Yard Dawgs the 6-3 victory to sweep the two-game series in Roanoke.
Barone (8-7-2) took the loss after stopping 13 of 16 shots against. Andy DiCristofaro (0-0-0) stopped 7 of 10 shots in relief. James Kruger (1-3-2) took the win after stopping 50 of 53 shots against
