RiverKings defeat Rivermen 3-2

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — Led by Matt Harrington’s three-point performance, the Mississippi RiverKings (32-20-3) defeated the Peoria Rivermen (31-13-11) 3-2 in front of 3,132 on Friday night at the Landers Center in Southaven.

In the first period, the RiverKings jumped out to a 2-0 lead. In Mississippi’s first goal, Matt Harrington dished a pass to forward Corey Tyrell for a backhanded goal. Matt Harrington found a wide open net from a pass behind the net from Derek Sutliffe to advance the RiverKings lead to 2-0.

With 9:32 on the clock in second period, Joe Sova notched a slap shot goal from the far right circle on a power play to give the RiverKings a 3-0 lead. Four minutes later, Eric Witzel of Peoria would pot a goal to cut the RiverKings lead to 3-1.

Late in the third period, Rivermen forward Witzel ushered his second of the game on rebound goal to pull Peoria within 3-2. However, it would not be enough for a comeback.

Peter Di Salvo (12-5-1) earned the win by diverting 21 of 23 shots, while Peoria goalie Tyler Parks (8-3-4) took the loss by stopping 24 of 27 shots.
