Columbus, GA – The Columbus River Dragons lost in overtime Friday night to the Athens Rock Lobsters, 6-5. The River Dragons defeat marks their third consecutive loss to the Athens Rock Lobsters.

Columbus exploded in the first period. Tyler Barrow, and Alex Storjohann each recorded power play goals, and Kevin Szabad buried one while battling at even strength with Athens.
Columbus executed an outstanding effort, shutting out the Rock Lobsters at the close of the first period.
The second period was dominated by Athens, with the River Dragons providing several power play opportunities. Athens’ Garrett Milan scored at even strength 4:41 into the frame, and Luke Croucher scored two power play goals.
Lucas Texmo put the River Dragons back ahead before Gleb Bandurkin evened the score for Athens, closing the second frame at 4-4.
The River Dragons failed to capitalize on the power play during the third period, having only matched Athens’ efforts.
Kyle Moore put Columbus ahead at 10:29, but Joe Mack kept the Rock Lobsters in it with a goal at 15:38, forcing overtime.
Eric Neiley scored the game-winning goal in overtime for Athens, taking the victory against Columbus just 1:35 into the overtime period. The game ended in favor of the Rock Lobsters, 6-5.
The River Dragons served a mind-boggling 47 penalty minutes during the contest, ultimately offering the victory to Athens.
The Rock Lobsters will face the River Dragons in Columbus again Saturday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
