Columbus, Ga – The River Dragons hosted the Mississippi Sea Wolves on Saturday.
With the Dragons leading 8-1 in the third period, an incident occurred along the boards, including a check from behind on the Dragons’ Nathan Balkwill.
The result was a serious injury to Balkwill, including lacerations.
The severity of the injury, as well as the player’s bodily reaction to the hit and contact with the boards and glass, necessitated a postponement to the match.
The FPHL released a statement overnight that “Balkwill was OK, and expected to make a full recovery” after being taken to the emergency department of a local hospital.
Needless to say the arena was in shock, and after an altercation following the hit, the game was called with the Dragons awarded an 8-1 decision.
We will have more on Balkwill as the FPHL and River Dragons make news available.
Update:
From the Dragons
After undergoing further testing, Nathan Balkwill has a broken nose and several facial lacerations but no other medical issues. He has been discharged from the hospital. We thank you for your support of Nathan, his family and the team.
