Richards out, Tortorella in? No official statement from Columbus yet

Several outlets early Wednesday morning have reported that the Columbus Blue Jackets have fired head coach Todd Richards after a 0-7-0 start to the NHL season.

On Tuesday night, the Jackets lost to the New York Islanders, 4-0. Columbus Blue Jackets logo

After the game, Jackets players were seemingly defending their head coach.

“This isn’t a lack of effort,” Columbus defenseman Jack Johnson said. “Guys are trying, I promise you that. Coaches can’t play for us. It’s 100 percent not on them. Times are tough right now and we have to stay together.”

Those words seemed prophetic at the time and seem to have been proven true this morning.

Thos same reports of Richards’ firing also suggest that John Tortorella has been hired as his replacement.

That will be an interesting dynamic with several former New York Rangers players on the roster.

Tortorella last coached in the NHL in the 2013-14 season after one campaign in Vancouver.

Prior to that season he coached the Rangers.

As this report goes to publication no official statement has been released by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
