BOISE, Idaho – The Ontario Reign (22-11-2-4), four-time Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL’s 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, fell by a 3-2 decision to the Idaho Steelheads (24-11-1-3) in front of a crowd of 5,358 on Saturday night at CenturyLink Arena.

The Steelheads used their special teams to put the Reign into a two-goal hole in the first period. The first goal came while Ontario was on the power-play, as Jason Bast took a pass from Jefferson Dahl and broke into the Reign zone, snapping a shot low to the stick side of Joe Cannata for a shorthanded tally at 15:41. Idaho Steelheads logo

Dahl then added a goal of his own seconds later when he knocked in a rebound after the puck deflected off of the boards behind the Ontario net at 15:59.

Ontario nearly broke through on a power-play near the end of the frame when Rocco Carzo had maneuvered his way to the front of the Idaho net, but Henri Kiviaho made a split save to deny Carzo.

After Brady Ramsay began the second period in the penalty box for roughing, the rookie forward took a pass from Alex Roach just as his penalty expired and blasted a shot past Kiviaho from inside the blueline to get Ontario on the board at 2:11.

Nolan Julseth-White then tied the score for the Reign when he corralled the puck at the left point and beat Kiviaho with a low slap shot at 6:20.

The Steelheads regained their lead when Brett Robinson flew down the right wing and tucked a shot underneath the arm of Cannata at 7:39.

Robinson’s goal eventually stood up as the game-winning goal for the Steelheads, as Ontario saw its season-high nine-game unbeaten streak (8-0-0-1) that began on Dec. 26 come to an end; the defeat also marked the end of the team’s seven-game win streak.

Cannata took the loss with 30 saves; Kiviaho earned the win with 30 stops.
