ONTARIO, Calif – Forward Valentin Zykov and defenseman Alex Roach provided the scoring, but the Ontario Reign (0-1) fell to the San Diego Gulls (1-0) 3-2 in the shootout at Citizens Business Bank Arena in the team’s first-ever American Hockey League (AHL) preseason contest.
The Gulls opened the scoring early in the first period as forward Bryan Moore snuck a shot past Reign goaltender Michael Houser (SOL, 25 saves on 27 shots) at 2:45. Forward Harry Zolnierczyk made it a two-goal advantage on the power play 5:22 into the middle frame. 
With the clock winding down in the second period, Roach jumped into the offensive rush to bury the team’s first AHL preseason goal, beating Gulls netminder Matt Hackett (W, 30 saves on 32 shots) at 17:28. Forward JordanSamuels-Thomas and defenseman Nick Ebert picked up assists.
In the third period, Reign forward Valentin Zykov made it 2-2 on the power play lifting a shot past the glove of Hackett from the left-wing circle at 11:54. The Reign and Gulls grabbed their first taste of the new 3-on-3 overtime format with the Reign firing seven shots including a breakaway from Zykov, but Hackett stood tall to force a shootout. Gulls forward Ondrej Kase provided the only tally to grab the victory. The Reign finished the contest 1-for-5 on the power play while the Gulls went 1-for-7.
