Red Wings stall Hurricanes, 5-4

In Raleigh, Sebastian Aho tied the game late for the Carolina Hurricanes, bu the Detroit Red Wings manged a 5-4 win Saturday night after the skills competition.

“I thought our compete level was excellent,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “I give our guys lots of credit, I thought they dug in. There were pushes back and forth. They’re one of the best teams in the League, and I thought our guys did a really good job.”

Thomas Greiss made 30 saves to get the win, in a game with rare offense.

“It was a low-to-high pass by them and I was just able to get in the shooting lane,” Erne said. “It took a good bounce off me to center ice, and I had a step on [Hurricanes defenseman Jake Bean]. I was able to get a backhand on net.”

Jordan Staal, Dougie Hamilton and Martin Necas also had goals for the Canes.

“Overall, we just weren’t sharp,” Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “I didn’t like our power play. That wasn’t sharp (0-for-2). We didn’t do anything we talked about doing before the game.”

The Canes dropped to 27-9-4.

In a back and forth game, Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha and Valtteri Filppula also scored for the Red Wings in regulation.

“You have to have traffic, you have to get pucks to the cage,” Blashill said. “I thought we did a good job of that. [Larkin’s] goal was a chaos goal. That’s what you have to have to beat real good goaltenders.”

Petr Mrazek made 24 saves. in the loss.

“We were chasing the game a little bit, but I still thought we still had some chances,” Hamilton said. “It felt like we should have won.”
