In Detroit, Jordan Oesterle scored midway through extra time on Monday night to send the Red Wings to a 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks, on Monday night.
“It was a surreal moment,” Oesterle said. “I didn’t know when I’d get my first goal here or what it would be like, but it was special to have it be an overtime winner for the team I grew up cheering for, in front of my family and friends.”
Alex Nedeljkovic made 14 saves for the Detroit win.
“We did a lot of good things in that game, but it is frustrating to give away a chance to win a game like that,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “I was happy with the way we responded. We managed the puck well, which meant we didn’t have to do as much defending.”
Richard Rakell scored the Ducks only goal, his strike in the middle frame tied the at 1-1.
“Our offense needs goals for everyone, so Rickard getting a couple makes him feel better about his game,” Ducks head coach Dallas Eakins said. “He never stopped working — he just needed a couple chances to go in, and now a couple have.”
Dylan Larkin opened the scoring with a goal in the first period for a 1-0 lead to Detroit.
“We were trying to run a play for [Lucas Raymond], but they moved the forward over to that side of the ice,” Oesterle said. “When the puck came my way, I backed up a little to see what [Raymond] was going to do, but I saw I could use (Ducks defenseman Cam) Fowler as a screen, so I took the shot.”
Detroit improved to 20-20-6.
The Ducks dropped to 23-16-9.
John Gibson made 26 save in the Anaheim loss.
“We don’t love giving away a point, but we’ve played five games in eight nights and we have a lot of guys who are banged up,” Gibson said. “The break is coming at a good time for us, but our guys should have their heads high.”
