Red Wings roll five in win over Vegas Updated

In Detroit, the Vegas Golden Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Red Wings in the first period on Sunday, off a goal from Nicolas Roy.

Detroit had the perfect response with three goals of their own in the opening frame en route to a 5-2 win.

Thomas Greiss made 38 saves in the Red Wings win.

Detroit improved to 6-5-2.

“He’s a (Greiss) good goalie, he’s going to stop anything he can see,” Vegas’ Shea Theodore said. “We needed to do a better job of getting in front of him and taking away his eyes.”

Detroit was 2-for-4 on the power play.

“Obviously, special teams were a huge factor tonight,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “We won this one with special teams and great goaltending.”

Jonathan Marchessault had a goal for Vegas in the third period to make the score, 4-2, to Detroit.

“I thought we played our best first period of the road trip, and we were down 3-1,” Vegas head coach Peter DeBoer said. “I’m sure Laurent would want at least one of those back, but we are asking him to play once every two weeks, and that’s tough. He made a lot of great saves tonight as well.”

Vegas dropped to 6-6-0.

Detroit’s Lucas Raymond started the first period rally to tie the game, 1-1.

Robby Fabbri made it 2-1 for the Red Wings.

Pius Suter posted Detroit’s third goal of the stanza for the 3-1 lead.

Vladislav Namestnikov gave the Wings a bit more breathing room with a strike just past the midway point of the second period, for a 4-1 lead.

“I thought the second period might have been our best stretch of hockey this year,” Detroit’s Dylan Larkin said. “I thought we outworked them tonight. Every guy worked hard, and Thomas Greiss was incredible.”

Marchessault‘s goal cut it to two goals in the third.

“It’s a .500 road trip, which is OK,” Marchessault said. “It could have been a great road trip if we had won tonight, but we didn’t get it done.”

Detroit’s Tyler Bertuzzi potted an empty-net marker for the 5-2 final.

Laurent Brossoit made 25 saves in the Vegas loss.
