In Washington, DC, Dylan Larkin completed a comeback by the Detroit Red Wings
when he scored 1:37 gone in extra time on Wednesday night to down the Capitals, 3-2.
Washington led the game, 2-0, before the Wings rallied.
Thomas Greiss made 26 saves for Detroit in the win.
Washington dropped to 4-03.
“We have to do a better job at managing the puck [in overtime]. The whole thing is about puck possession,” Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette said. “It ends in an odd-man rush usually. This was not transition [goal] since we had people back, but nonetheless it is not getting done.”
Alex Ovechkin scored to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead in the first period.
“When we have the lead and we’re not playing our best, we’ve got to find a way to finish that game 2-0 or 2-1,” the Capitals’ Nick Jensen said.
Evgeny Kuznetsov added a second strike for Washington in the middle frame for a 2-0 advantage.
“I didn’t feel any frustration or panic on the bench at all,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “We just kind of kept playing and certainly to do it, to come back and have a chance to win in overtime you need good goaltending against that team.”
Detroit moved to 4-2-1 with the win.
Adam Erne pulled Detroit within one with a goal midway through the second period.
“It shows a lot of character,” Erne said of the comeback. “[That’s] a highly-skilled team with a lot of big names, and we just stuck with it, stuck to the game plan and eventually it paid off.”
Robby Fabbri forced the extra session with a game-tying goal at 2:03 of the third period.
The Caps’ Vitek Vanecek made 22 saves in the loss.
