Red Wings rally for 4-3 win over Canucks in OT OT penalty shot is the difference

In Detroit, the visiting Vancouver Canucks blew a two-goal lead in the third period, and then lost to the Red Wings, 4-3, on a penalty shot in extra time by Jake Walman with 23 second gone in the extra session.

“I was shaking a little bit,” Walman said. “(Lucas Raymond) won a battle and made a great pass up the ice. That’s what set it up.”

Alex Lyon made 28 saves in the win.

Detroit improved to 27-18-6.

“We have had a crazy number of third-period comebacks to get points and wins,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “I think we’re tops in the League, but that’s not a recipe for success, especially against an elite team like this.”

Detroit took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Raymond with 45 seconds gone in the opening stanza.

Vancouver dropped to 34-12-6.

“I thought we played a pretty good game,” Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said. “We were up 3-1, and we made about four plays you can’t make when you are up 3-1.”

The Canucks rallied with three goals in the middle frame.

Nils Hoglander tied the game, 1-1,69 seconds into the middle frame.

After killing off a pair of penalties Filip Hronek put the Canucks up, 2-1, at 11:10 as he skated out of the penalty box.

Elias Pettersson hit at 13:27 of the second to send the game to the third period leading 3-1.

“We obviously played some good hockey to be up 3-1, but we gave them life after the power-play (goal),” Pettersson said.

Daniel Sprong hit off the power play to trim the deficit to 3-2 for Detroit at 2:34 of the third period.

Michael Rasmussen forced thee extra session when he scored off a tip in at 7:51.

“We win in a lot of different ways,” Detroit’s David Perron said. “That’s what makes us special. Once we got the second goal, we knew we had a shot.”Casey DeSmith made 24 saves in the loss.

“I felt like the penalty kill was great in that long stretch, but we had to use some guys for a lot of minutes,” Tocchet said.
