Red Wings extend Chicago’s woes in 6-3 decision

A four-goal second period by the Detroit Red Wings effectively ended the match with the Blackhawks in Chicago.

It was ugly.

Detroit was 1-for-8 on the power play, the Hawks went 1-for-4 in a dreadful display of offensive ineptness.

Detroit was coming off a 6-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

Lucas Raymond scored a hat trick for the Red Wings.

“It was fun for sure, first of all to get the bounce-back win after a tough night last night (6-1 loss at the Montreal Canadiens),” Raymond said. “Of course, to score my first career hat trick, it’s for sure a special night.”

Detroit improved to 3-2-1.

“He’s (Raymond) getting … an opportunity, No. 1,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “And he’s earned some of it in the NHL at a young age, which not lots of guys get the chance to do. And No. 2, he’s playing with real good players on a real good line and getting important minutes. I think, obviously, he’s capitalized on that, and it’s great that he had the hat trick. There’s opportunities that he’s getting, and he’s got to keep making sure he does a real good job in the minutes that he gets.”

Alex Nedeljkovic made 32 saves for the Detroit win.

Tyler Johnson, Dominik Kubalik and Henrik Borgstrom scored for the Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks have yet to hold a lead this season, the latest loss prompted a team meeting after the game.

“I think, again, we have to keep it in house,” Chicago head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “I’ve said a lot and I don’t think I need to say more. I think they have a lot of pride. We expect to respond tomorrow and the day after and play Wednesday.

“I think it’s a step back from the last two games. We did a lot of good things, I thought against New York [Islanders] and Vancouver, weren’t rewarded for it. But we have to do it for longer. We have to be willing to stick with it. Too much of tonight is a slip back into things that got us in trouble on the [season-opening] road trip, and we paid the price.”

Chicago is 05-1 to start the season.

Carter Rowney, Vladislav Namestnikov, and Tyler Bertuzzi scored single markers for the Wings.

Marc-Andre Fleury put on another disturbing display of inadequate goaltending making 31 saves.

Patrick Kane was placed on COVID19 protocol.

“Specifics of what’s said in the locker room always stay in the locker room,” Chicago’s Jonathan Toews said. “But you could imagine we’re just trying to dig ourselves out of the hole that we’ve kind of gotten ourselves in for six games here. It’s not a good feeling. At the end of the day, the solution’s in our locker room. It’s everybody. So I think everyone’s trying to take responsibility on how they can be better and help our team and get the win column.”
