In Detroit, the visiting Boston Bruins got off to 2-0 and 3-2 leads on the Red Wings on Saturday night, then ended up losing their first regulation game of the season, 5-4.
“We played 20 good minutes only to find ourselves down 2-1, then played an excellent second period to find ourselves down 3-2,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “The guys kept at it, and I think we got the result we deserved.”
Ville Husso made 26 saves in the win
James van Riemsdyk scored at 5:21 of the first to put the Bruins up, 1-0.
Matthew Poitras scored midway through the first for a 2-0 advantage to Boston.
Lucas Raymond trimmed the deficit to 2-1 for Detroit at 16:20 off the power play.
The Red Wings knotted it up at 2-2 midway through the middle frame on a a power play marker from Jake Walman .
At 13:41 of the second, Charlie Coyle restored the Boston lead at 3-2.
It stayed that way until the third period when a three-goal outburst by Detroit put them ahead, 5-3.
Detroit improved to 7-4-1.
Dylan Larkin scored at at 6:50 to tie it, 3-3.
David Perron struck at 8:56, and Andrew Copp made it 5-3 at at 10:34 of the third.
“They wanted that win and we didn’t play our best hockey in stretches,” Boston defenseman Hampus Lindholm said. “But we fought back and were still in the game at the end, even with the penalties.”
The outburst effectively took the Bruins out of the game.
“The power play started out really hot, but we knew it couldn’t stay that way,” Detroit’s JT Compher said. “Tonight, we had a good attack mentality.”
A power play marker from David Pastrnak made the 5-4 final score at 14:11.
Boston dropped to 9-1-1.
Linus Ullmark made 35 saves in the loss.
