In Seattle, the Kraken were looking for two points in their pursuit of a playoff spot, but they’ll take the one for their loss to the Detroit Red Wings in extra time, on Monday.
Detroit’s Ben Chiarot hit for the game-winner with 67 seconds gone in the extra session for a 4-3 win the Red Wings.
“It was a nice job by [Lucas Raymond] and [Larkin] driving down the right side,” Chiarot said. “I found a soft spot in the slot there. ‘Larks’ made a great little backhand pass into me, and I just tried to shoot it.”
Alex Lyon made 38 saves in the win.
“That’s obviously a very critical moment, but we’re going to have more critical moments later on,” Lyon said. “It’s just the nature of the game and the way it goes, and we found a way.
“It felt good. Mentally, it’s a grind. I didn’t feel like I had the sharpest two games early on, so I’m just happy to contribute to a win as always, and I’m super proud of the guys.”
The Red Wings moved to 29-20-6.
“It’s always a goal to get as many points from these games on the road, especially this type of road trip with the type of opponents we faced,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “Great job by the guys to fight back and get two quality road wins (also against the Calgary Flames on Saturday) against two quality teams fighting for their (Stanley Cup Playoff) lives.”
Moritz Seider scored at 13:30 of the openig stanza for a 1-0 lead to Detroit.
Jared McCann hit at 18:32 off the power play to get the Kraken even at 1-1.
“The last few games have been good for us and we’re heading in the right direction,” McCann said. “But every single game here is must-win, so we’ve got to come in with that mindset.”
The Kraken dropped to 23-21-11.
“The point is a real important point,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “It’s disappointing to lose the point in overtime, but the point that we got is valuable.”
In the middle frame, Raymond added a marker at 7:18 for a 2-1 advantage to the Red Wings.
McCann collected a double whe he tied the game, 2-2, midway through the second.
“The ‘D’ made a good play to keep the puck in,” McCann said. “We’ve been practicing kind of backside shots for the ‘D,’ and [Jamie Oleksiak] made a good play there to just try to put it there for me, and I just tried to bang it in.”
Detroit’s Daniel Sprong hit off an odd man rush at 15:58. to reclaim the lead, 3-2, for the Red Wings.
“Great on the finish, and that’s what (Sprong) does,” Lalonde said. “He doesn’t need much for offense, and he had some more looks in the third that could have iced the game.”
Seattle forced the extra session when Jaden Schwartz scored at 7:25 of the third period to make it 3-3.
Joey Daccord made 28 saves in the loss.
