Red Wings down Canes, 3-1

In Raleigh, Detroit’s Jonathan Bernier got some offensive support and made 37 saves  in a 3-1 win for the Red Wings over the Hurricanes on Monday night.

“I thought we played tight defense,” Detroit’s Dylan Larkin said. “We were in a 0-0 game going into the third, and a lot of times this year, you’ve seen that go the other way. But we have to start finding ways to win those games, and we did tonight.”

After a scoreless opening two periods, Adam Erne and Filip Zadina put the Red Wings up 2-0.

“(Erne) has got a of skill, but he plays the right way,” Larkin said. “He plays hard. He plays with (Luke Glendening and Darren Helm), who play the right way every night and you see results. It’s great that he’s putting the puck in the net this year.”

Nino Niederreiter was the lone goal scorer for the Canes, he made the score 2-1 in favor of the Wings in the third period.

“This was not good obviously,” Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “Normally when we lose, I can say, ‘Give the other team credit.’ No disrespect to the other team, they played hard. But this is the one game where I’m like, that was gross. To a man.”

Sam Gagner potted an empty-net goal with just under a minute left on the clock.

“Zadina has been more dangerous on a regular basis,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “That’s a great shot that he got. [Rasmussen] has done a really good job. Both those guys have taken big strides and hopefully they continue over the last 12 games.”

James Reimer made 27 saves. in the loss.

“We were trying to be too cute, too fancy at our blue line and their blue line, and that backfires quickly,” Niederreiter said. “They’re a hard-working team and they definitely outworked us.”
