Red Wings down Avs, 2-1 in OT Kane hits for winner in extra session

In Detroit, Patrick Kane scored at 3:42 of extra time on Thursday night to give the Red Wings a 2-1 win over the visiting Colorado Avalanche. Alex Lyon made 28 saves in the win.

The Red Wings improved to 30-20-6 off their third straight win.

“You don’t win that often when you are trailing going into the third, and you certainly don’t do it as many times as we have this year,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “I think that speaks well of our group.”

After a scoreless opening stanza, Nathan MacKinnon  scored at 4:48 of the middle frame to give the Avs a 1-0 lead.

It was MacKinnon’s 34 goal of the season.

“It was a hard-fought hockey game, but I thought [Detroit] was probably the more desperate team in the third period,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. “It’s a good road point.”

The Avalanche dropped to 35-18-5, and had a two-game streak snapped.

“I thought we created some chances, but we spent too much time in our own end,” Colorado’s Cale Makar said. “You can’t do that all night, and some of that is on me. I can’t turn the puck over when we need to get it out of our end.”

Dylan Larkin evened the game, 1-1, when he scored at 12:02 of the third period.

“This is two more points, and they all count the same right now,” Larkin said. “This is a huge team win.”

Detroit had a chance to win it in regulation with a late penalty to the Avs, and Colorado missed on a breakaway seconds before Kane hit for the winner.

“Alex kept us in the game tonight,” Larkin said. “He helped us get the point and he helped us win it in overtime.”

Justus Annunen made 28 saves in the loss.
