In Detroit, Robby Fabbri scored in the middle frame to give the Red Wings a 3-2 lead on Tuesday night, over the Carolina Hurricanes.
“Obviously, you are going to be happy with five out of eight points against two of the best teams in the League,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “That’s a good step forward for us as a hockey team.”
Jonathan Bernier made 34 saves to get the win with a little offensive support.
The loss ended an eight-game win streak for the Canes.
“We didn’t win at special teams,” Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour said. “It’s hard to give up two goals on the penalty kill and win games in this league.”
Nino Neiderreiter gave the Canes a 1-0 lead, and Sebastian Aho tied the game at 2-2 ahead of Fabbri’s goal.
“I don’t think we were under any pressure,” the Hurricanes’ Martin Necas said. “It’s way worse when you are on a losing streak.”
Adam Erne struck for two power-play goals in the Detroit win.
“I think we feel really good about the way we are playing right now,” Erne said. “We’ve found a way to play that’s a balance between taking too many chances and being too cautious. When we do that, we’re a pretty good ream.”
Filip Hronek added an empty-net goal to seal the win.
“He’s been good offensively all season, especially on the power play, so we weren’t worried about him not having a goal,” Blashill said. “But I’m sure he’s glad to finally get one.”
James Reimer made 24 saves in the loss.
“We had a good start, but that’s not good enough,” Niederreiter said. “Sometimes you get a little too satisfied. The more you win, the more teams want to beat you, and they outworked us tonight.”
