Red Wings clip Sharks in OT, 3-2 Copp get winner in OT

In Detroit, the Red Wings’ Andrew Copp scored 25 seconds into extra time on Tuesday to give them a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

“[Michael Rasmussen] said we won a battle, but he’s the one who won it,” Copp said. “I lost the face-off, but he won the puck battle and drew both guys to him. I just waited for the puck and put it in the empty net.”

San Jose’s Logan Couture took the hit for the game-winner.

“I won the face-off toward the middle, and somehow Rasmussen ended up with a partial breakaway out of it,” Couture said. “I think Reimer stopped three shots from him, and then I had a chance to clear it, but I put it right onto Copp’s stick.”

Ville Husso made 28 saves in the Detroit win.

“I had [Rasmussen on a line] with [Dylan] Larkin and [Lucas] Raymond, but I put him back with Copp and [David Perron] because they’ve created some nice chemistry,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “I rarely single a player out for an effort, especially on a team where we all need to play well to win games, but [Rasmussen] deserves it tonight.”

The Red Wings moved to 20-18-8.

“Ville was really good for us again tonight,” Lalonde said. “It feels like he’s getting back to the rhythm he had early in the season, which is a good sign for us.”

Detroit took a 1-0 lead off a tip-in by Adam Erne.

Timo Meier tied it up, 1-1, at 7:58 of the second.

San Jose dropped to 14-25-10.

“I thought we were better tonight,” San Jose coach David Quinn said. “It wasn’t a great game, but it was solid. We had a lot more honesty, pace and compete in our game tonight.”

Detroit retook the lead on a goal from Rasmussen at 16:29.

San Jose got even on a strike from Couture with seven seconds left in the middle frame.

Couture’s goal was off a sharp angle and deflected off Moritz Seider‘s skate blade.

“That could have been a screaming-and-yelling moment — I think I’ve had one of those this season and it worked, so I didn’t want to waste another one,” Lalonde said. “I just told them that’s not how we play — we don’t give up goals like that.”
