Carter Verhaeghe collected another clutch goal at TD Garden as the Panthers prevailed in Brad Marchand’s return to the venue.
* Matthew Schaefer extended his career-opening point streak to six contests and became the youngest defenseman in NHL history with a game-winning goal.
* Sidney Crosby surpassed Mario Lemieux to establish the Penguins record for the most regular-season and playoff points combined and moved up that same NHL all-time list in the process.
Verhaeghe vaults visitors to victory in Marchand’s return to TD Garden
Carter Verhaeghe scored the go-ahead goal at 19:34 of the third period after Bruins forward Morgan Geekie got a late game-tying tally as the Panthers earned a win in Brad Marchand’s return to TD Garden.
* Verhaeghe, who had his 22nd career game winner with Florida to tie Scott Mellanby for eighth place on the franchise’s all-time list, is no stranger to scoring clutch goals on Causeway Street. He had the overtime clincher at the venue in Game 7 of the 2023 First Round as the Panthers pulled off the upset against Marchand and the 65-win Bruins.
* Marchand recorded two assists in his return to TD Garden, with his 505 career points at the venue marking the second most in NHL history behind longtime teammate Patrice Bergeron (557). Marchand was brought to tears when the hosts honored him with a first-period video tribute and standing ovation.
SCHAEFER STRETCHES STREAK TO SIX, SECURES FIRST WINNER AND MULTI-POINT GAME
Matthew Schaefer stretched his career-opening point streak to six contests with an assist and scored the winning goal to record his first career multi-point game as the Islanders earned their third straight win following an 0-3-0 start to the season. Schaefer posed for a photo post-game with Sharks forward and No. 2 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft Michael Misa, who had an assist for his first career point.
* Schaefer (18 years, 46 days) became the youngest defenseman in NHL history with a game-winning goal, besting the previous mark set by New Jersey’s Craig Wolanin (18 years, 135 days on Dec. 9, 1985). Schaefer was also the League’s second-youngest blueliner with a multi-point game behind Pittsburgh’s Chris Joseph (18 years, 44 days on Oct. 24, 1987).
… WHILE OTHER METROPOLITAN TEAMS ALSO PICK UP WINS WITH HELP FROM No. 1 PICKS
Devils forward Jack Hughes (3-0—3) and Penguins captain Sidney Crosby (1-0—1), who were also selected first overall in their respective NHL Drafts, each found the score sheet to help lift their teams to wins Tuesday:
* Hughes netted three of the Devils’ five goals as the club defeated the Maple Leafs to extend their win streak to five games – tied with the Jets and Red Wings for the League’s longest active run. Hughes recorded his third career hat trick and tied Bobby Holik, Randy McKay, Claude Lemieux, Stephane Richer and Bob MacMillan for the sixth most in Devils/Rockies/Scouts history.
* Crosby, who scored one of the Penguins’ five goals, boosted his career combined regular season and playoff points totals to 700-1,196—1,896 (1,539 GP) and surpassed Mario Lemieux (766-1,129—1,895 in 1,022 GP) for the most in franchise history and seventh most in NHL history. It marked Crosby’s first goal against Kevin Lankinen, the 161st different goaltender he has scored on. The only players with more are Alex Ovechkin (184), Jaromir Jagr (178), Patrick Marleau (177) and Mark Messier (164).

LARKIN LOOKS TO EXTEND STREAK ON THREE-GAME WEDNESDAY
Wednesday’s three-game slate features national telecasts in the U.S. and Canada when the streaking Red Wings visit the Sabres on TNT and HBO Max before the Canadiens and Flames battle on Sportsnet. The night begins when the Devils host the Wild at 7 p.m. ET.
* Dylan Larkin (5-6—11 in 6 GP) will look to extend his season-opening point streak to seven games when he faces the Sabres in a battle between future Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 teammates Rasmus Dahlin and Lucas Raymond (Team Sweden) who are also entering the contest on a hot stretch: Dahlin (0-5—5) is riding a four-game assist streak, while Raymond (2-3—5) has collected all five of his points in the past three games. Larkin has played a big part in Detroit’s five-game winning streak and is coming off a 2-2—4 outing Sunday. He can become the first Red Wings player with consecutive four-point games since Brendan Shanahan (2 GP in 1996-97).
* Last season’s Calder Trophy winner, Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson, could face last year’s Calder Trophy runner-up, Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf, when Montreal visits Calgary on Sportsnet. The Flames have won four straight games against the Canadiens dating back to Nov. 14, 2023, with Wolf tending goal for three of those victories (3-0-0, 1.33 GAA, .955 SV%, 1 SO).
* Hutson (7-66—73 in 91 GP) is closing in on the 100-game milestone and could track down Chris Chelios (12-65—77 in 100 GP) for the most points by a Canadiens defenseman through his first 100 career NHL games. According to NHL Edge data entering play Oct. 21, Hutson ranks high in max skating speed (22.91 mph; 98th percentile) and total skating distance (24.12 miles; 97th percentile).
