Reading double-up Walleye, 4-2

READING, Pa – The last time the Reading Royals faced off in the ECHL playoffs against a team from Toledo they were known as the Storm not the Walleye. Reading won that series 3-1 back in 2005. Even though the situation is different the stakes are the same. Heading into this series the Royals are the big underdog as the 8th seed to the top seeded Toledo Walleye.  2016KellyCup

On Tuesday night, the Royals played like the top seed as goaltender Martin Ouellette made 33 saves on 35 shots and once again the Royals got goals from four different players in a 4-2 win in Reading, Pa. The Royals now take a 2-1 series lead with Game Four Wednesday night in Reading.

Both teams combined for 72 shots on net and neither team scored on the power play going a combined 0-7.  Toledo Head Coach Derek Lalonde decided to go back to goaltender Jeff Lerg instead of Sunday’s game winner and Detroit Red Wings prospect Jake Peterson. With the series in the balance Wednesday night’s starter could swing the series one way or another.

In the meantime Royals goaltender Martin Ouellette is showing why he was one of the ECHL’s top goaltender all year long.  Another reason for Reading’s success is their balanced offense. So far the Royals have gotten goals from 10 different players. Only Brandon Alderson has more than one goal for Reading in the playoffs with two.
