Rank shuts out RiverKings, 1-0

PEORIA, Ill. – The Mississippi RiverKings (12-14-2) fired 37 shots on goal, but were stymied the entire game and were shutout, 1-0, by Kyle Rank and the Peoria Rivermen (16-8-2) Saturday night at Carver Arena.

A physical tone was set early in the first when Dennis Sicard and Daniel Sobotka dropped the gloves for a fight at 4:34 but it would be the goaltenders who stole the show the rest of the way. The first period was filled with power plays for both sides, but Peoria_Rivermen_Hockey_Team_Logoafter 20 minutes it was 0-0. Adam Courchaine stopped 16 shots in the first and Rank turned aside 11 as the RiverKings went 0-for-3 on the power play and the Rivermen went 0-for-2.

Peoria grabbed the game’s only goal with a power-play marker at 11:38 of the second period. With Paul Clancy in the box for roughing Josh Harris fired a rink-wide pass from the right circle to the left circle, where Jake Trask one-timed a shot past Courchaine. It’s the second straight night with a power-play goal for Trask.

Rank made that stand with 26 saves over the final two periods, finishing with 37 total for his second shutout of the season. It’s the second time the RiverKings have been shutout in 2014-15. The last time was Nov. 25 vs. Louisiana, also a 1-0 loss.

Notes: The RiverKings are now halfway through their season and stand at 12-14-2 through the first 28 games… Matt Harrington returned to the RiverKings lineup after missing the last five while on loan to ECHL-Wheeling… The RiverKings have been shutout twice this season, both 1-0 with Adam Courchaine in net for Mississippi.
