One of the most infuriating, frustrating and down-right mystifying 100+ point teams in hockey cleared the century mark Saturday as the New York Rangers defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2.
With the loss, the Red Wings qualified for the post season, their 25th straight appearance, because the Boston Bruins were getting throttled by the Ottawa Senators, 6-1.
Oscar Lindberg netted what would become the game-winner Saturday to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.
Justin Abdelkader cut the deficit to 3-2 with a goal as the Wings pulled Jimmy Howard for the extra attacker.
Dan Boyle and Kevin Hayes scored for the Rangers who got a solid effort from Antti Raanta who made 31 saves.
Howard had 17 saves in the loss.
Eric Staal was held out of the third period after colliding with Jesper Fast in the second period.
Riley Sheahan tied the game at 1-1 early on in the second period.
Hayes’ goal was a nifty deflection of a shot by Dylan McIlrath from above the right circle.
